On Feeling Obsessive

‘We should enjoy our obsessive moods. To obsess well is to realise that the lovely person we sketch in our heads is our creation: a creation that says more about us than it does about them. We may not really be getting to know another person properly, but we are growing our insight into who we really are.’

On Feeling Sulky

‘Sulking combines intense anger with an intense desire not to communicate what we are angry about. This brings us to the odd privilege of being the recipient of a sulk: we only get into a sulk with people whom we feel should understand – that is, people we respect. It is one of the stranger gifts of love.’

My partner and I used these cards after a rough week and it finally got us past "I'm fine" into what was actually going on. The mood descriptions are plain enough that you don't have to be good at talking about feelings to use them. We've kept them on the coffee table since.

I was skeptical that a deck of cards could untangle my messy feelings, but the prompts on each card break down the conversation into such gentle, specific questions that even my partner and I have started using them after arguments. We've had more honest check-ins this month than in the whole past y

The card prompts actually help me name what I’m feeling before I even realize it, and my teenager has started using them to open up without rolling her eyes. We’ve kept it on the coffee table for quick check-ins, and the conversations it sparks feel surprisingly real.
