A tool for intimacy and honesty

A strong relationship is not the product of magic or luck. It grows through the small, repeated acts of honesty, vulnerability and humour we are brave enough to share with one another. Yet even the most loving couples can struggle to begin these important conversations. We are blocked by shyness, resentment or the sheer unfamiliarity of putting certain thoughts into words.

The Couple’s Dice is a tool to help partners connect. It gently encourages us to say things we long to express but too often repress. Each of the six sides prompts one kind of communication we regularly neglect or avoid. Together, these six prompts open the door to tenderness, catharsis, laughter and deeper trust. Along the way, the game may also reveal truths we hadn’t fully understood ourselves before – unspoken desires, quiet disappointments or forgotten hopes – giving us the chance to grow not only closer to our partner, but also more in touch with who we are.

Instructions:
1. Choose a quiet moment and sit comfortably together, free from distractions.
2. Take turns rolling the dice. The first partner rolls then reads the prompt out loud.
3. The person who rolled should answer honestly – with warmth, humour or candour – using the prompt as a starting point. Speak from the heart.
4. The other partner listens with as little interruption as possible while their partner is answering. The goal isn’t to problem-solve or defend, but simply to hear one another.
5. Take it in turns. The listener can then respond to the same prompt or roll again for a new one.
6. Keep going for a few rounds. One roll may open up an evening’s worth of conversation.
7. Return to the game each week to strengthen your communication and deepen your connection.

We'd been together six years and fallen into the same boring routine, so I grabbed these on a whim. The questions push past small talk and got us actually talking about stuff we'd never brought up. Some cards are surprisingly funny, which keeps it from feeling like a therapy session.

Date night got a lot more interesting once we started using these. The questions push past the usual small talk and got us laughing and being honest in a way we hadn't in months.

My partner and I have been together eight years and thought we knew everything about each other until one of these cards asked something neither of us had ever said out loud. The honesty prompts are the real gift here, not the silly ones. We've made it a Sunday night thing.
