My 9-year-old usually groans at history books, but she's been reading this one on her own before bed. It doesn't just list dates, it connects past events to stuff she actually worries about, which has led to some great dinner conversations.

My eight-year-old asked why people argue about borders after we read the chapter on empires, and that conversation alone was worth the price. The way each big idea gets a whole double-page spread with busy, funny illustrations makes complex stuff feel totally approachable.
